Also, since the books are written from the perspective of the characters and Jon Arryn is dead by the beginning of the series, we never get a chapter from his perspective. Littlefinger wanted to block Sweetrobin from becoming a ward at Dragonstone. Given the 2 characters that, in theory, know him best are dead by the end of the first book, there are few chances to talk about Jon Arryn. It merely serves as a MacGuffin for Ned when King Robert Baratheon offers him the position of Hand of the King. In my opinion, the Lannister incest scandal has nothing to do with Jon's murder. So that when Jon dies, Stannis will have a say in who the regent is, which will likely block Littlefinger's move. Sweetrobin will surely remain an epileptic under Stannis and Maester Cressen's care, but he will become otherwise reasonably healthy and independent - and under Stannis's control. Plus, sending Sweetrobin to Dragonstone takes Sweetrobbin out of LF's control.
#WHY DID LITTLEFINGER WANT JON ARRYN DEAD FREE#
Jon wants to send Littlefinger to Stannis Baratheon as a ward, where he will be free of the poisons - at least sweetsleep in quantities that cause Maester Coleman to express concerns about the dosage. Littlefinger is poisoning Sweetrobin, who must tractable and weak for Littlefinger to rule the Vale. So the question isn't why Littlefinger has Lysa killed Jon, but why he kills Jon now, before Littlefinger possesses a position sufficient to wed Lysa, so that the Vale remains out of his reach. Once he reaches this status, he won't hesitate to knock off Jon. Littlefinger is playing his game in court to raise his status to be a plausible husband to Lysa. Lord Petyr Baelish has designs on Lysa Tully Arryn so that he can rule the Vale, which he cannot realize unless Lord Jon Arryn is out of the way. It was Stannis who went to Jon Arryn: Lord Stannis, Catelyn asked, if you knew the queen to be guilty of such monstrous crimes, why did you keep silent I did not keep silent, Stannis declared. Sure, it allowed him to marry Lysa Arryn, but there would be plenty of other powerful women about who were widowed as a result of the war, and Jon would have died pretty soon anyway so he could just marry Lysa then if he wanted the Vale If you look at it this way, LF had better oppurtunities if Jofffrey's ilegitimacy was discovered than if it wasnt. If Robert has no children, then Stannis would become king after him, which would also be sure to lead to another civil war. And also, after that, presuming that Robert wins, then he is left either with a legitimate heir by a second wife, but they would probably be still a child when he died, creating more oppurtunities for LF to sieze more power either by serving the new king or rebelling against him. But why would he bother doing this, when, especially if Jon Arryn doesnt die and goes to Robert, there would be war against the Lannisters anyway, where there would be many oppurtunies to rise high as he did in Wo5K. Why would Littlefinger want Jon Arryn dead? The reasoning that is given is that it would create a feud between the starks and lannisters that would eventually lead to war.

An earlier thread got me thinking about this topic.
